Azure's Backstory
Born on a different shard than the source, Azure was only seven years old when his home world went through a sundering. Flung to the source before the worlds rejoined, the young man felt his memories of his home world slowly slipping away from him. It was harder and harder to retain names, faces, and specific events… How he grew, what he had done up until now, his training, his own experiences… Those memories stayed strong. But the faces of his parents, his friends, his siblings… Those faded away. To protect himself from the loss, or something else at work, it was unknown.On his homeworld, Azure struggled to find his place. He enjoyed creating things, most enjoying cooking and baking, and devoted much of his time in learning this, even at a young age. He also idolzed the strong mages and healers of the world, wanting to someday be like them. However, when he began to mentor a mage of Gridania when he turned 6… Everything came crumbling down around him.It was found out that his body contained and could hold and absorb much more aether than was average. Any attempt to harness or use it caused the aether inside of him to react strongly and negatively, causing a near explosion each time. Despite the mentors he spoke to, nobody seemed to know what to do to help him. Simple meditation, focusing, and attempting to bleed off some of that energy did nothing. After nearly an entire year of studying… His seventh birthday loomed, and things seemed dire. After learning about his aether and experimenting it, the excess energy was affecting his everyday life as well. The abundance of unused aether caused him to become agitated, restless, and caused sleep to be difficult to obtain.Feeling hopeless, he celebrated his seventh birthday with his family and pushed forward without direction… Until a new direction was chosen for him, on that fateful day. One moment he was attempting to meditate in his front yard, and the next, he was waking up in what looked like the Gridanian outskirts of town… But it looked wrong. It felt wrong.He had been transported to another world.Time moved very fast for Azure, then. He was taken into an orphanage, all alone in the world otherwise, and he grew up in the shelters of Gridania. His memories further waned of his previous shard, to the point when he would start to believe people when they told him it was all stories in his head. Moving out on his own only when he became of age at 16.His childhood on the source, however, was very different from his home world. Quickly being identified as someone with an overabundance of aether, the magic users of the source had ideas of what to do for Azure. Different types of crystals could be used to absorb excess aether, new meditation techniques, therapy for the mind to calm his mind from moving too fast, allowing serenity to take over.Finally, Azure began his training as a conjurer. It would take many, many years to master even the basics for him; an added challenge of managing his aether. But the one benefit to his condition was his near unending stamina for spells and magical training. While the other students exhausted themselves with just a half days work, Azure was eager to continue until sunset each day.He grew up in the orphanage as he trained as a conjurer, until finally, reaching an age of maturity, he set out on his own. Azure spends years and years continuing his training, joining with the conjurer’s guild in Gridania to further his powers and skill. He would often volunteer and join expeditions around Eorzea as a healer, eager to explore the world.During one of his journeys at the age of 18, this is when he first meets with the scions. A chance meeting, one that would eventually lead to his cooperation with them.Becoming swept up in the scions and their mission, he finds himself helping them and spending time with them more often than not; growing close to Alphinaud, Minfilia, and Yda. Their objectives spoke to him, and so he did his best to help them with their goals.More years passed this way, helping the scions (and the possible warrior of light) throughout their journeys. Honing his skills as a healer to protect his friends… It was during these years that Azure found someone other than the scions, the conjurer’s guild, or friends from the orphanage to grow close to… Someone he would experience many firsts with. He met Rhys.Rhys was a warrior who joined up with the scions from time to time, coming from Limsa Lominsa. He was a midlander with dark black hair and piercing red eyes; his eyes being the first thing that drew Azure to him. The two didn’t get along at all, at first. Azure was slightly reckless, impatient, always getting into everyone’s business and trying to help… While Rhys was quiet and calm, only growing excited when certain subjects were mentioned; he seemed wise beyond his years. The two men were nearly the same age, hardly even a year apart. Despite their constant bickering, the two quickly became inseparable… Over time, more than just friendship grew between the two of them.The closer the two grew, the more Rhys became involved in the scions. Slowly moving from someone adjacent, to as much of a member as Azure. After two years of knowing each other, and a year since they had grown into romance, the two moved into a small apartment in Limsa Lominsa together. Azure missed Gridania at times, but the sea fairing city was easy to get around from, and living with Rhys was worth the change in scenery ten times over. The two men were nineteen years old now, slowly nearing their twentieth year. They had much planned for their future, adventures, treasure to be found, and to further their relationship.But when urgent word is sent to both Azure and Rhys, they quickly find their way to Camp Dragonhead in Ishgard to join The Warrior of Light, Alphinaud, Tataru, and Haurchefant to be appraised of the situation. Due to the dire nature of the events, the two decide to stay with the scions and join them on the journey into Ishgard. The news of the loss of the scions hits both of them hard, a heavy weight resting on the entire group’s shoulders.Exploring Ishgard, learning what they can, and meeting Estinien, Lady Iceheart, and the people of Ishgard… Things seem tense, but perhaps good can be done here. Upon meeting Aymeric, a small glimpse of hope blossoms in them all…But when truths begin to come out in Ishgard, the scions and their companions rush to piece the bits of information together and reveal the whole story. Rhys, Azure, and Tataru stay behind in Ishgard while the rest of the scions journey to The Vault.While the main group is gone, Azure and Rhys are left wondering if they should have joined them… Staying behind seemed almost cowardly, though it had not been decided by them; someone had to stay back with Tataru in case something happened. But before they could dwell for long, Tataru got an urgent call that she believed to be Y’shtola. The communication had been fuzzy at best, rough, and nearly pure static… But all of them were willing to believe it was truly her.Azure, Rhys, and Tataru rushed to the south and out of Ishgard, towards the Coerthas Central Highlands, where Tataru said the communication had come from. What they did not expect to find, out of all of the opinions, was the Ascians.Disappointed that it was Azure, Rhys, and Tataru that show up instead of the warrior of light and the scions, a fight quickly breaks out - the goal is clear, to rid them so that the warrior of light and scions do show up.The battle is extremely one sided. Azure and Rhys are unable to fight against the unknown Ascian for long, using everything they have learned and every ounce of strength they have to fight. Tataru desperately calls for help, playing right into the Ascians hand, but not knowing what else to do.Both fighters breathing heavily from the battle, Azure in the back and Rhys up front, the Ascian doesn’t appear to be winded the slightest. It’s during this slight lull in the fight that Tataru manages to contact Estinien, who, surprisingly, immediately makes his way towards them.It’s also when the Ascian decides to rid this little fight of the healer, as a reflected blade of pure aether manifests and is mere moments from striking from Azure’s blindspot… Rhys sees it at the very last moment, dashing towards the blue-haired miqo’te and knocking him over just seconds before that blade pierces the place where Azure used to be… And into Rhys’ black instead.The rest of that day is a blur, something Azure cannot remember.Despite every ounce of his aether pouring into his beloved, whatever the Ascian had done had severed some deeper connection of Rhys’ life and aether… He could not be revived.Estinien showed up and somehow, the Ascian backed off.Azure carried Rhys back to Limsa Lominsa himself, burying him there.At some point after Rhys’ death, Azure’s control waned and his powers slipped away. At first, he didn’t care about that or anything, but months after Rhys’ death, no matter what he did he couldn’t regain control over them. His aether fluctuated wildly, uncontrollably, like that of his youth. It would be many more months before he returned to Gridania once more, seeking help with his aether.Crystals were given once more, to bleed off the aether, though the spiritual healers told him the problem was his own to work through, and there was little anyone else could do for him to help. It was a problem in his mind, in his spirit, something only he himself could conquer.Azure retired, then. He couldn’t use his powers, so he couldn’t be of use to anyone. He didn’t want to fight any longer, not now, not alone.Selling their small apartment had been hard, but Azure instead poured himself into something new. Throwing to the back of his mind his grief, his worries of the scions, and instead focuses on something new: Opening a bakery.Using the sizable sum of money he and Rhys had saved for the future to purchase a small plot of land in the Mists, he set about all the preparations he would need to open a bakery and to fill his days with something to keep his mind off of everything.
